What is Irlen Syndrome?

Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual processing disorder that affects your brain’s ability to process visual information. Often, Irlen is misunderstood as being an optical problem, but it is not determined by an issue with the eyes. Rather, it’s a defect in someone’s visual pathway that sends messages from the eye to the brain. Those who suffer from Irlen Syndrome may notice varying degrees of difficulty that range from low, moderate, and severe. And anyone with Irlen may experience one or several of the different distortions that are often noted by those with the disorder. Fortunately, there are effective solutions and techniques available for those with Irlen that will help eliminate their symptoms.

Testing For Irlen Syndrome

While there are Irlen self-tests available online, it’s best to be diagnosed by a certified Irlen screener. An Irlen screener is a professional who has been certified in the Irlen Method and is a qualified screener who can accurately detect Irlen Syndrome in patients. Rita Eissmann, the Irlen-certified screener at Irlen Screening of Reno, is trained to properly screen adults and children over the age of 6 for Irlen Syndrome. She is the only Irlen-certified screener in the Northern Nevada area and has a true passion for helping those with Irlen Syndrome to get the necessary help they need to successfully overcome their symptoms.

Symptoms and Misdiagnosis

Often, people who suffer from Irlen Syndrome are misdiagnosed which prevents them from getting the proper treatment. This can cause further complications such as reading difficulties, headaches, and light sensitivity which can be frustrating and even painful. If you suffer from any of the following symptoms, then consider taking the test and get screened by the Irlen-certified diagnostician at Irlen Screenings of Reno.
Light Sensitivity
If you feel bothered by or notice any discomfort when exposed to sunlight, fluorescent lights, bright light, glare, headlights, or any type of light at night, then you may be suffering from Irlen Syndrome.
Migraines & Headaches
People who suffer from headaches are typically misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and mistreated. By being screened for Irlen, you may just find the headache relief you’ve been searching for.
Reading Difficulties
There are several variations of distortions that Irlen sufferers may experience while reading. DIstortions can make reading very difficult and can affect your ability to learn. Fortunately, the Irlen Method has created effective solutions.
Attention Deficit Disorder ADD/HD
Children who seem inattentive, careless, unmotivated or rush through activities can at times be misdiagnosed as having ADD or ADHD. However, children with Irlen Syndrome also exhibit these and other similar symptoms.
Autism Spectrum
The solutions used by Irlen sufferers can also be beneficial for those with Autism and Asperger Syndrome who struggle with light sensitivity, sensory overload, or processing visual information.

Testimonials

“Our son Aiden was diagnosed with Irlen syndrome when he was 9 years old after years of struggling with comprehension, reading, writing, spelling and drawing. Words would move in a swirling pattern and he had difficulty with tracking left to right. He struggled with ski racing due to difficulty judging distance. He also experienced chronic headaches and eye fatigue. Fast forward 4 years and our son is thriving. He is an A/B student, reading above grade level, plays golf, skis and is the goalkeeper for his soccer team.

We can’t thank Rita enough for her kindness, gentleness and patience while screening our son for Irlen Syndrome. Her wealth of knowledge led us to Susan our Diagnostician as well as initiating a 504 plan with school. The support we have received from Rita is immeasurable.”
“Our son, a middle schooler, has epilepsy. He has sensitivity with light and has Irlen Syndrome. The Irlen glasses have helped minimize glares of light, such as the sun reflecting off the snow or the lake. The reflections would send him into an “episode” of several petit-mal seizures (one right after another). Wyatt notices he “doesn’t feel as stressed at school and thinks better” with his glasses on. He proudly wears his glasses because he knows they help calm his brain and reduces the light sensitivity. He openly talks about his situation with his peers which gives them a better understanding of him wearing Irlen glasses. He has had them for over 2 years now and loves them!”
